The Nanaimo Curling Club in Nanaimo, BC is hosting the 2008 Canadian Women’s and Men’s Masters Curling Championship from March 31 to April 6. The best over 60 teams representing their provinces will be competing the national title. Playdowns.com is proud to be hosting the online scoring and results.

Hritzuk, Sanders win senior curling titles

Saskatchewan’s Eugene Hritzuk knocked off two-time Brier champion Russ Howard 7-5 Sunday in the final of the Canadian senior men’s curling championships in Prince Albert, Sask.

Hritzuk, along with third Kevin Kalthoff, second Verne Anderson and lead Dave Folk from the Saskatoon Nutana Curling Club, built a 4-2 lead through four ends on the strength of three stolen points. Howard managed to tie the score two ends later, but a deuce by Saskatchewan in the seventh end proved to be the difference.

At least now Jennifer Jones won’t have to answer any more questions about Paisley, Scotland.

Since she failed to reach the podium in her first opportunity at representing Canada at the women’s world curling championships in 2005, the Winnipeg skip has been dogged by queries about what went wrong.

Meger advances to final at Mixed Provincials

Doug Meger and his team of third Kerri Miller, second Vic Miller and lead Linda Brunn from the Royal City Curling club advanced to the final at the British Columbia Mixed Provincials with a win over Deane Horning in Saturday’s semi-final. Meger will face Greg Monkman in the final Saturday at 2:30pm in a re-match that saw Meger hand Monkman his only defeat in the round-robin.

The winner receives a birth in the Canadian Mixed championship this November in Iqaluit.

Sanders rink finally loses, but still leads

It was a good news, bad news afternoon for British Columbia’s Pat Sanders at the 2008 Canadian senior curling championships in Prince Albert, Sask.

The bad was the Sanders’ foursome succumbing to its first loss in the championships, which heads to playoffs today. Saskatchewan’s Delores Syrota scored one in the 10th end to clinch a 7-5 victory over Sanders in Draw 21.

Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones ran smack-dab into the Great Wall of China here in the Okanagan Valley.

China’s Bingyu Wang stole two in the third end to take a 4-0 lead, then hung on for a 7-5 victory over the Canucks in the Page playoff one-two game of the women’s world curling championship at the Greater Vernon Multiplex last night.

She never had a chance to throw.

Jones’s foursome fell behind early, rallied late and ultimately fell just short in a 7-5 loss to China’s Bingyu Wang in Page playoff action Friday at the Ford world women’s curling championship.
