The first weekend of playdown action is upon us with six junior events taking place the weekend of November 29 to December 1.

Manitoba wins national mixed curling title in Iqaluit

Sean Grassie of Winnipeg has Manitoba on top of the Canadian mixed curling ranks for the first time in 17 years.

Grassie defeated Ontario’s Wayne Tuck 6-4 on Saturday to win the 46th edition of the Canadian mixed curling championship, held at Arniatok Arena in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

It’s the eighth mixed title for Manitoba since the championship began in 1964 in Toronto. Alberta leads all provinces with nine wins, while Saskatchewan also has eight victories.

Saskatchewan, Manitoba remain unbeaten at Canadian mixed curling championship

askatchewan’s Darrell McKee continued to roll at the Canadian mixed curling championship Monday, earning two victories to keep his rink undefeated.

McKee, with leads Amanda Jacobsen and Jennifer Armstrong, second Jason Jacobsen and third Allison Gerhardt, opened the day with a 9-6 win over Alberta’s Tom Appelman in Draw 5.

McKee (5-0) finished Monday with a 7-5 win over Mark Dacey of Nova Scotia in Draw 6.

Sault Ste. Marie gets 2010 Scotties

Canada’s best female curlers will converge on Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., for the 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, to be held from Jan. 30 to Feb. 7.

Saskatchewan unbeaten at Candian Mixed

Saskatchewan’s Darrell McKee remained undefeated with a pair of victories Sunday at the Canadian mixed curling championship.

McKee, leads Amanda Jacobsen and Jennifer Armstrong, second Jason Jacobsen and third Allison Gerhardt opened the day with a 10-5 win over P.E.I.’s Bill Hope in Draw 2. McKee (3-0) capped his day with a 7-3 triumph over B.C.’s Greg Monkman in Draw 4.

Manitoba’s Sean Grassie rink is the only other unbeaten team through the opening weekend of action, sporting a 2-0 record. Grassie scored two in the 10th end to beat former Brier participant Mark Dacey of Nova Scotia 7-5 in Draw 3 action.

Burtnyk’s new third, Walchuk, now officially a Manitoban

Kerry Burtnyk’s new rink is now fully Manitoban.

Don Walchuk, the new third, has established residency in the Keystone Province before the Nov. 1 deadline and is therefore eligible to compete with Burtnyk and company during the Safeway provincial curling championship.

Burtnyk, who represented Manitoba at the Brier last March, made the announcement during an interview following a press conference for the BDO Classic Canadian Open at the MTS Centre yesterday.

Curling for a good cause in Abbotsford

The 16th annual Curl for Kids Charity Bonspiel is taking place on Nov. 23 at Abbotsford Curling Club.

This event is one of the longest running fundraisers in Abbotsford to help less fortunate families at Christmas.

Teams, individuals or couples may sign up to curl – and no is experience necessary. It is a modified draw, so it’s fun for everyone.
