Can you say “on fire”?
Jay Peachey and his Royal City rink of Grant Dezura at third, Kevin Mackenzie at second and Robbie Gallaugher at lead have rung off six wins in a row with their semi-final win over Dennis Graber of Kamloops 7-6. It didn’t come easy though as Peachey needed to draw full four-foot for the win in the extra-end.
Graber got a fast start taking two in the first end. Peachey answered right back with a deuce of his own in the second and followed with a steal of one in the third. Graber fought back for two in the fourth end to take a 4-3 lead. After a blank in the fifth, Peachey had to draw almost the button as he nuzzled up to his own stone on the button to get a difficult two and take a 5-4 lead.
The seventh end could have spelled disaster for Peachey. Brian Windsor (who throws skip stones for Dennis Graber) had an angle raise for a possible three. Windsor threw it narrow and missed and only scored one.
Peachey blanked the eighth end and played to blank the ninth end early on. After a few good shots by Graber’s team of Bill Johnson at lead, Kelly Row at second and Brian Windsor throwing skip stones, they forced Peachey into a messy end. After a roll out by Brian Windsor on his last, Peachey only needed to draw full eight-foot for two.
The tenth end had Graber in a position for two after Brian Windsor’s first stone. The only problem was that he left Peachey a chance for a double. Jay threw a big weight double on a rock in the four-foot and just missed making it as it glanced by second shot back eight-foot by less than an inch. Windsor was left with a draw to the eight-foot ring for two and made no mistake with it getting his two and forcing an extra end.
Peachey second, Kevin Mackenzie, jammed a peel in the extra-end removing two of Peachey’s own rocks and putting them in jeopardy of giving up a steal leaving Graber lying two. Grant Dezura bailed his teammate out with a double peel as one of the guards up front removed one of Graber’s stones in the house. Graber guarded the rest of the end leaving Peachey with the draw to the four-foot he didn’t miss.
Jay Peachey finished the game shooting 90% as Brian Windsor only shot 70% which made the difference ultimately in the game. Lead through third on each team were close percentage wise.
Sean Geall will face Jay Peachey in the British Columbia Men’s Championship final at 4:00 pm Sunday. Something will have to give as both teams are playing well heading into the final.
