Template waivers created for member curling centres

By Rebecca Connop Price

Two template waivers that your centre can use to ensure curlers are aware of the risks associated with the Roaring game have been created.

The first waiver is for adult curlers, while the second deals with youth (minor) curlers.

Both waivers, which were created by Curl BC Participation Manager Melissa Sim, incorporate the recent helmet recommendation from Curling Canada.

While the waivers do not specify that all U12 curlers wear CSA-approved helmets, Curl BC supports this particular recommendation and supports the work of your centre to ensure the safety of your curlers, young and old.

Curling centres should be aware that waivers should be signed every year. Signing a waiver at the start of a curler’s membership in your centre may not be enough to protect your centre against liability claims. The template waivers can be downloaded from https://www.curlbc.ca/member-resources/concussion-protocol/.

Sarah Daniels wins scholarship from Curling Canada

By Rebecca Connop Price

A promising student/athlete curler from BC will get a much-needed financial boost after being named a recipient of the 2017 Curling Canada Foundation For the Love of Curling scholarship.

Sarah Daniels from Delta, who is studying Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, has been awarded $1,100 through the program.

Sarah is among 13 winners of the scholarship from across the country. She was one of the three young women who earned $1,100 scholarships thanks to a one-time grant of funds from the now-defunct Women’s World Curling Tour (WWCT). The other ten recipients received $1,000 in funds collected from donations from curling fans across the nation.

The scholarships are in place to help young university or college students cover a portion of their education and curling costs during the 2017-18 school year.

“We couldn’t be happier to see these young curlers rewarded for their hard work — on the ice, in the classroom and in their communities,” said Peter Inch, Chair of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors and a member of the Selection Committee. “There were so many deserving recipients, and it made for some difficult decisions. At the same time, it was gratifying to see what kind of quality there is in the youth curling community; it fills me with optimism about the future of our sport.”

Sarah has had many successes in her curling career so far. She won gold at the Optimists’ International U18 Curling Championships in 2013. In 2016, she won the BC Junior Women’s Curling Championship and earned a silver medal at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships. That year she travelled with Nova Scotia’s Team Fay to Worlds in Copenhagen, Denmark, as an alternate where she helped the team win gold. She has also won a silver and a bronze medal at the BC Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.

Plenty of opportunities for curling coach training

By Rebecca Connop Price

Are you a curling coach, or are you hoping to become a curling coach in 2017?

Curl BC is offering a number of Club Coach and Competition Coach workshops across the province.

The Club Coach Workshop is a great opportunity to ensure your members have trained coaches who deliver youth, intermediate, and recreational curling programs. This workshop is designed to enhance the skill set of the coach/instructor who functions primarily at the club level, be it with beginner curlers from youth to master age groups.

The Competition Coach Workshop is the first step in becoming Competition Coach Certified but is also a great opportunity for those coaching and curling at a club level to gain skills and knowledge. To coach in the playdowns for BC Winter Games, U18 and U21, teams require a coach who is Competition Coach Certified.

Club Coach Workshops are being offered:
Vancouver Curling Club – Sept 9-10, 2017
Tunnel Town Curling Club – Sept 9-10, 2017
Powell River Curling Club (Club Coach Youth) – Sept 23, 2017
Victoria Curling Club/Juan de Fuca Curling Centre – Sept 30-Oct 1, 2017
