Time to book your chance to be a BC champion!

By Rebecca Connop Price

Your team is only a few wins away from being champions of BC!

But Junior teams and Women’s teams who are hoping to enter playdowns only have a few weeks left to register.

The deadline for the first junior open playdown, taking place at Osoyoos Curling Club Nov. 24-26, is Nov. 13. The deadline for the first women’s open playdown, taking place at Hope Curling Club Dec. 8-10, is Nov. 19.

Shannon Joanisse, Curl BC’s High Performance and Competitions Manager, says: “Whether this is your first time competing to earn a berth to provincials or you’re a seasoned competitor, this is a great time to think about signing your team up. This could be your year!”

The cost of entering playdowns is about $100 per player, which gives you the chance to play in a BC championship with the best in the province. It also gives you the chance to win prize money, ranging from $800 for first place to $400 for third place.

Curl BC will not charge a competitors’ fee for people entering BC playdowns for the first time, a savings of approximately $40 per curler.

The 2018 Boston Pizza BC Junior Curling Championships take place Dec. 18-23 in Langley and the 2018 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Best Western, takes place Jan. 2-7 at Victoria Curling Club.

If you have any questions about entering playdowns, please contact Shannon Joanisse, Curl BC’s High Performance and Competitions Manager, at 604-333-3619 or sjoanisse@curlbc.ca.

Officials training day was a huge success

By Rebecca Connop Price

An officiating professional development day held at Richmond Curling Centre this past weekend was a huge success.

A total of 25 officials from around the province attended. They were given off-ice and on-ice practical training. The goal of the professional development was to better prepare curling officials for the work they do at regional and provincial events across the province.

Curl BC Officiating Coordinator Patti Caldwell said they had some great feedback from participants. “I think the most popular sessions were the hands-on sessions with the clocks, radios and measuring. The conversations were lively and the questions asked were excellent.”

Caldwell led some of the sessions along with course conductors Dianne Barker, Linda Kirton and Darryl Kirton, who have all worked at national and international events.

“It was a pleasure to be an instructor with a group that is invested in officiating,” said Caldwell.
