Four berths are up for grabs this weekend at the final BC men’s curling playdown event being held in Abbotsford.
The qualifiers from these events being held from today until Jan. 7 will be heading to the 2018 belairdirect BC Men’s Curling Championship, taking place at Parksville Curling Club from Jan. 30-Feb. 4. The winner of the Parksville event will go on to compete at the Tim Hortons Brier in Regina, from Mar. 3-11.
Sixteen teams will compete in Abbotsford in the triple knockout competition. Like all men’s events this season, the event is open, which means teams from any part of the province could enter.
The event features Richmond’s Team Brower, Victoria’s Team Dangerfield, Cloverdale’s Team Silva, Penticton’s Team Eden, Golden Ears Winter Club’s Team Dezura, Royal City’s Team Guignard, Abbotsford’s Team Freeman, Mission’s Team Hanni, Victoria’s Team Henderson, Victoria’s Team Jackson, Royal City’s Team McArdle, Richmond’s Team McQuiggan, Vernon’s Team Longworth, Cloverdale’s Team Rebman and Golden Ears Winter Club’s Team Peckham.
In the Kootenay playdowns, Team Medford took the single berth that was available. Team Medford from Cranbrook Curling Centre features skip Chris Medford, third Steve Tersmette, second Josh Firman and lead Jeff Langin.
The Victoria Curling Club rinks of Team Montgomery and Team Craig secured berths at the Island open playdowns in December. Team Pierce, from Royal City Curling Club, and the Okanagan rink of Chris Baier qualified in the Vernon playdowns.
Team Geall, from Kelowna Curling Club, and Team Joanisse, from Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge, qualified at the end of November because they were the top-ranked BC men’s teams on the CTRS list.
The defending champions, Team Cotter, will also be at the event, with three of the four curlers who won last year. The team will be made up of Jim Cotter, Catlin Schneider, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky.
