BC/Yukon goes to the bottom of the spare pool to get help in finishing 2nd

The final day of competition for the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Curling Championship got started a little earlier then had all week with 4 teams representing their provincial commands having to return to the Golden Ears Curling Club in Maple Ridge, BC for a possible 2 more games. With the team from the Nutana Branch 362 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan taking first place honours after their 5-2 record and on top of the standings it left New Brunswick, BC/Yukon, PEI and Quebec to decide who will be awarded 2nd place. All four teams finished the round robin portion with 4-3 records and were required to playoff to decide 2nd place. As a result of the team draw to the button competition held during the championship practice sessions the Moncton Branch team would curl against the team from Sherbrook and in the other tie breaker would be the team representing the Charlottetown legion branch against the Salmon Arm branch team.

One of the strongest fields ever for Men’s Provincials

All 10 teams have now been identified for the BC Men’s Canadian Direct Insurance Curling Championship. Joining last years champion rink of Bob Ursel and Greg McAulay (CRTS BC Champions) will be Interior Qualifiers; Dennis Graber, Tyrel Griffith, Jeff Richard and Rick Folk. The Coast Qualifiers were; Jay Peachey, Bryan Miki, Sean Geall and Jason Montgomery.

The field includes a number of former Brier and world champions. Including: Rick Folk (1980 & 1994), Greg McAulay (2000), Brent Pierce (2000), Bryan Miki (2000) and Gary Van Den Berghe (1996).

Tickets are on sale now and are available through the Golden Ears Winter Club by calling 604-463-4813 or visiting the website www.gewc.ca. Ticket Prices: Week Event Pass $50; Weekend Pass $35; Day Passes $10; and Single Game Tickets $7. Single Game and Day Passes are only available at the door.

Competition begins February 9th and concludes on Sunday, February 15th. Round Robin games run at 12 pm and 7 pm Monday thru Thursday with the final Round Robin game on Friday morning. Page Playoffs games commence Friday at 7 pm and carry through to the final on Sunday at 4 pm.

The Golden Ears Winter Club is located at 23580 105th Avenue, Maple Ridge (next to Planet Ice). Parking is available with overflow parking just north of the Lougheed Hwy.

Brazil … going crazy for curling?!!

As strange as it sounds, Brazilians are getting serious about curling.

While you pick yourself up off the floor, you should know that Brazil has issued a challenge to the U.S. for one of the two Americas spots to the Ford World Men’s Curling Championships next spring in Moncton, N.B.

Where were all the American curling fans?

Ever since curling became sanctioned as an official Olympic sport, we Canadians have been inundated with propaganda that Americans are flocking to this “cross between shuffleboard and cleaning your kitchen” in droves. Supposedly, this is why Grand Forks was chosen to host the 2008 Men’s World Curling Championships.

Yes, Grand Forks attracted the largest crowds ever to a curling championship held in the U.S., and the World Curling Federation may be pleased. But that is more due to proximity to the Canadian border as evidenced by the dominance of red and white flags over red, white and blue.
