The final matchup for the 2018 belairdirect BC Men’s Curling Championship presented by Berwick Retirement Homes is set.
Sean Geall’s Kelowna Curling Club rink of third Jeff Richard, second Andrew Nerpin and lead David Harper defeated Jason Montgomery’s Victoria Curling Club rink of third Cam de Jong, second Miles Craig and lead Will Duggan 6-5 in the Sunday morning semi-final.
Geall, from Abbotsford, now faces four-time defending champion Jim Cotter of Vernon in Sunday afternoon’s championship game at 4 p.m. at the Parksville Curling Club. It’s a rematch of the 2016 championship game in which Cotter defeated Geall 7-6.
Cotter had Ryan Kuhn at third, Tyrel Griffith at second and Rick Sawatsky at lead that season. This year Catlin Schneider is throwing third stones for Cotter after he replaced John Morris who is off to the Olympics to play mixed doubles with Kaitlyn Lawes of Manitoba.
In the semi-final Montgomery attempted a triple takeout in the key eighth end. Tied at 4-4 at the time, he instead gave up a steal of two – after a measure for the second point – to fall behind 6-4. Montgomery had control at the midway point, up 4-3.
Geall forced Montgomery into one in the ninth end and then ended it with a takeout on a biter at the back in the 10th.
